Residential Project – Booragoon

Creating a Cooler, Brighter Personal Dance Studio in Booragoon

When this Booragoon homeowner transformed their enclosed patio into a dedicated dance studio, they created the perfect space to practise from home. However, with large areas of glass exposed to the afternoon sun, the new studio quickly became uncomfortably hot during warmer months.

The challenge was more complex than simply reducing heat. Because the studio was positioned between the outdoor area and the main living space, any dark or highly reflective window film would also reduce the amount of natural daylight flowing through to the adjoining lounge room.

The goal was to improve comfort inside the dance studio while maintaining a bright, open feel throughout the home.

The Challenge

The homeowner wanted to achieve several outcomes:

  • Reduce heat build-up inside the dance studio.

  • Reduce the Glare.

  • Protect timber flooring from damaging UV exposure.

  • Maintain as much natural daylight as possible.

  • Preserve the open, spacious feel of the adjoining lounge room.

  • Avoid heavy curtains or blinds that would permanently block the view and natural light.

Finding the right balance between solar performance and visible light transmission was the key to this installation.

Our Solution

After discussing how the room would be used and the homeowner's priorities, we decided to take a staged approach rather than immediately tinting every window. Because the converted dance studio sits adjacent to the main living area, installing a darker film across both faces of the room from the outset risked reducing the natural light flowing into the lounge.

To achieve the right balance, we first installed SolarGard NightSky 30 on one face of the room (one of the two glass elevations). This allowed us to assess the improvement in comfort while ensuring the living area remained bright and inviting.

SolarGard NightSky 30 offers an excellent combination of performance and appearance, rejecting up to 94% of glare while reducing up to 49% of total solar heat. The difference was immediately noticeable, with the studio becoming significantly more comfortable without making the space feel enclosed.

The result exceeded the homeowner's expectations. Not only did the room become cooler and more enjoyable to use, but the film also gave the windows a cleaner, more modern appearance that complemented the home beautifully.

With the success of the first stage, we were then able to confidently proceed with tinting the second face of the room, knowing we had achieved the ideal balance between heat reduction, UV protection and preserving natural light throughout the home.

The Result

Following installation, the homeowner immediately noticed a more comfortable environment for daily use.

The completed installation delivered:

  • Improved comfort during hot Perth afternoons.

  • 94% Glare reduction.

  • Reduced solar heat entering the studio - 49% TSER

  • 99% UV protection to help protect flooring and interior furnishings.

  • A brighter alternative to traditional blinds or curtains.

  • Clear outward visibility with a clean, modern appearance - Very low Reflectivity film.

  • Better enjoyment of the converted living space throughout the year.

  • Life time residential manufacturers warranty.

Why Window Film Was the Ideal Solution

For homes with enclosed patios, sunrooms or converted living spaces, window film provides an effective way to improve comfort without sacrificing all the the natural light that makes these rooms enjoyable.

Rather than covering the windows with permanent window furnishings, professionally installed window film allows homeowners to continue enjoying their outlook while reducing heat, glare and UV exposure.

The Project - Before

The converted dance studio before the application of window film. As you can see, the large amount of natural sunlight entering the space meant the flooring was exposed to significant UV radiation, increasing the risk of fading and long-term damage. The room was also experiencing high levels of glare, making it less comfortable to use throughout the day and contributing to excessive heat build-up.

Step 2, Preparing the area

Preparing for Installation

With the plan confirmed, we began by preparing the end face of the studio for installation. Protective drop sheets were laid throughout the work area to safeguard the flooring, and the glass was carefully cleaned and prepared to ensure a flawless finish. Taking the time to properly prepare each window is an important part of achieving a professional installation and long-lasting performance.

Step 3 – The Transformation Begins

The difference is already becoming noticeable. With the two windows on the right completed in SolarGard NightSky 30 and the two windows on the left yet to be tinted, you can clearly see the improvement in appearance. The newly tinted glass has a cleaner, more modern finish while beginning to reduce glare and solar heat entering the studio, all without dramatically reducing natural light.

Step 4 – A Modern New Look

With the installation complete, the transformation is immediately noticeable from the exterior. SolarGard NightSky 30 gives the windows a sleek, uniform finish that modernises the appearance of the home while maintaining excellent outward visibility. Beyond the aesthetic improvement, the film is now working to reduce heat, minimise glare and protect the interior from harmful UV rays, delivering both style and performance in one solution.
